What is BPH?

BPH or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. BPH is common among all men over the age of 45. Typical symptoms of BPH include:

*Frequent urination, day and night

*Painful urination

*Difficulty starting urination

*Inability to completely empty your bladder

*Weak flow of urine

What is Microwave Thermotherapy?

Microwave Thermotherapy is a nonsurgical procedure that can bring relief to men suffering from the symptoms of BPH. A small flexible catheter that contains an antenna is inserted into the urethra as you are lying on a bed. The antenna transmits microwave energy that heats and destroys the enlarged tissue. How do I qualify for the procedure?

A physical exam with a urologist is necessary to determine if Microwave Thermotherapy is right for you.

Where is the procedure performed and how long does it take?

Since Microwave Thermotherapy is non-surgical, it is normally performed in an outpatient center where an overnight stay is not needed. The actual therapy lasts, about an hour, but plan on being at the center for 2-3 hours.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

Yes. But we will have you mildly sedated so that you can rest through the procedure.

Will I have any pain during the procedure?

You should not experience significant pain during the procedure; however, you may have some discomfort at the beginning of the procedure. Your physician may decide to give you some medication that should allow you to relax. You will be positioned in bed to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

What can I expect following the Microwave Thermotherapy treatment?

Most patients will require placement of a catheter following treatment, due to irritated tissue surrounding the urethra. The catheter will drain urine from your bladder while the swelling and inflammation recede. It is normally removed within a three to five day period.

What are the risks or complications? What about incontinence or impotency?

Because of its non-surgical nature, there are few risks and complications associated with the treatment. Incontinence and impotence are minimal complications occurring in less than 2.5% of patients. Your urologist will discuss the few risks and complications during your consultation.

How soon can I return to work?

Since Microwave Thermotherapy is an outpatient procedure, you should go home almost immediately after the treatment. Most patients resume normal activities one or two days after the treatment.

How many patients have been treated With Microwave Thermotherapy?

Across the country more than 10,000 patients have received Microwave Thermotherapy utilizing the TargisTm technology.

How long before I start to see results?

Most patients start to see results within three to six weeks. Maximum results are achieved in three to six months.

Will my insurance cover Microwave Thermotherapy?

Medicare and most insurance plans have approved Microwave Thermotherapy for the treatment of BPH. The staff at our office will be able to answer this question more specifically upon your visit.

Where do I get the procedure?

The procedure is performed at an outpatient treatment center. The initial consultation, which includes a physical exam and other diagnostic tests, are done in our office.
